Can you serve a leader with blemishes and imperfections? Every leader has them; no leader is perfect. Saul was not a perfect leader by any means, rather he was an inept leader. For instance, at this time in his life he was not being the model of courage that is required by kings to lead a nation into victory. In the past he had made some bad decisions like calling a fast during a time of war. Later he disobeyed God's orders to annihilate Israel's enemy, the Amalekites. He took things in his own hands without consulting the prophets or God himself. Saul was not on the top of his game as the king of Israel and the general of God's army. God expected strict obedience to His commands and Saul had failed Him more than once. King Saul was a big disappointment to God and to the nation of Israel. So how do we serve a leader like this? We can learn several things from David's interaction with King Saul. David had an intelligent plan in mind and he knew that the king was the key to his future. David had to stand before him and convince him of his ability to face and defeat the giant. There are four things that helped David cross Saul's line; the line of authority. 1. David was himself. But David said to Saul, "Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep..." (1 Samuel 17:34) Can you imagine standing before a king and saying that you used to work in a sheep field? David did not present himself like an experienced soldier nor did he put on a pretense. He did not pretend to be anyone else but himself. How many of us can be ourselves before great company like a king or would we rather put on a pretense to make ourselves look better? A pretense is nothing more than a façade, a fake image, and a false projection of oneself. A pretense is conveying to others a counterfeit image. Why would anyone want to live this way? It is dangerous living under a pretense because later on you may not be able to live up to your own fanfare and eventually your true self will be revealed before everyone. You see someone who puts on a pretense is insecure in who they really are and you do not want them on your team. On the other hand, authenticity is the opposite of pretense; it is being a secure and transparent person around others. It is one who is true to self and transparent around others. David stood before the king in shepherd's clothes, a shepherd's staff and a sling. David was himself and did not pretend to be anyone else in order to impress King Saul. So the next time you are in the presence of great company - be yourself, or are you afraid about what others may see in you? David, while in Saul's presence, was loaded with an unbelievable story. He was loaded with a testimony that honored God. 2. David honored God with his testimony. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear. (1 Samuel 17:34-36) Answer the following question: What is a testimony? The answer is found in the Scripture below: They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. (Revelation 12:11) What does this Scripture imply? First, it is referring to what Jesus did on the cross at Calvary. The majority of Christians understand the word Calvary since it was the location of Jesus' crucifixion; the place of our Savior's death. For Christians the cross is an emblem of victory not defeat. The crucifixion of Christ at Calvary was necessary to purchase our redemption. Calvary made it possible for us to access all the authority and power that Jesus possessed when he walked this earth. We can attribute God's work at Calvary to a work of grace that has empowered us for daily living. Calvary was the place where Jesus brought about a great victory for Christians in all ages; past, present and future. Calvary is a symbol of victory that brings real freedom and transformation to those who put their faith and trust in the Savior.
